MZZ Ventures · The story so far
The story.
What MZZ was, and what it's becoming.
01 — The roots
What it was.
MZZ started at the University of Maryland and grew into something bigger than a campus club: MZZ Global, with branches reaching startups across Africa and Asia.
The Africa arm put student analysts directly inside fast-growing African tech startups: pro-bono consulting, growth acceleration, and venture support, run in three-month cohorts, three times a year. Analysts trained through workshops on consulting and project management, with check-ins from operators at places like McKinsey and Jumia, and from VC firms investing on the continent.
Branches across two continents, working with real founders on real problems.
Three-month cohorts, three times a year. A cadence built around shipping, not meetings.
Startups MZZ supported went on to raise from firms like Launch Africa and Lateral Capital.
Then the founders graduated, and the chapters went quiet. The name stayed at Maryland.
02 — The relaunch
What it's becoming.
This fall, MZZ relaunches where it began, rebuilt around one conviction: a small team that actually ships beats a big club that meets.
Five to seven people, selected by application and interview. One real company per semester, September through November, delivering work the client actually runs on. AI-native as the single non-negotiable: builders who prototype, and strategists and researchers who turn ambiguity into decisions. Membership is earned each semester by showing up and finishing, and MZZ's founder is back, involved as an advisor.
The room is small on purpose. Everyone in it carries weight, and everyone leaves with work they can point to.
